Whiskey Tasting Review – Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Consensus Rating (0-100, from previously collected ratings) – No Consensus Rating

What are you reviewing? Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What overall grade do you give it? B+

Do you remember how much you paid for the bottle? $55 (Fair Price – $50)

Is the whiskey worth what you paid? Yes

Nose – Honey is the first scent I pick up, followed by some citrus, and a bit of vanilla, toffee, and some cinnamon. None of the scents are overly strong, but more delicate.

Palate – It has a very soft feel in the mouth and on the tongue, it’s a gentle bourbon with almost no alcohol burn. It takes a moment for the flavors to come out, but it’s a pleasant honey, followed by the cinnamon and some brown sugar, then a burst of maple syrup.

Finish – The finish is long and gentle with allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon, along with some chocolate/caramel flavors.

Does this whiskey remind you of a different whiskey? There is nothing truly unique about this bourbon except that it is exceptionally smooth. Not being unique is not a slight in this case, there are many aspects of this bourbon that are shared with other bottles, however, this bottle does all of them better.

In your opinion, what’s the best use of this whiskey (sipping or mixing? Any recommendations on a particular mix? I’ve really enjoyed sipping this one neat. I don’t think I’d use it in a mixed drink, it’s really just too good neat, or with an ice cube/splash of water if you prefer.

Is there anything about the whiskey we should know that we didn’t ask? This is a great bottle and will be a permanent fixture in my bar.
