What are you reviewing? Balcones True Blue 100

What overall grade do you give it? A

Do you remember how much you paid for the bottle? $55

Is the whiskey worth what you paid? Yes

Nose – Great smell. Strong corn smell, like a heated corn with a bit of ethanol. Scent of brown sugar after getting some air, and a scent of cherry with a bit of water.

Palate – Corn, of course, that’s very sweet on the lips, corn with more caramel on the tongue. After getting a bit of air, it was a deeper, creamier sweetness. After adding some water, it was bolder, smokier, and the cherry that I smelled came through also.

Finish – Medium finish of like a roasted, smokey corn, sweet smooth finish.

Does this whiskey remind you of a different whiskey? Nothing comes to mind.

In your opinion, what’s the best use of this whiskey (sipping or mixing? Any recommendations on a particular mix? I can drink this neat, with a few drops of water it brings out different flavors that were equally enjoyable, but different. It was very nice with a bit of ice too. I haven’t tried it in a Manhattan, but I’m confident it will be great.

Is there anything about the whiskey we should know that we didn’t ask? When I try a new whiskey, I always only have a small pour, neat the first night. Then I let it sit, and have another the second night, still neat. Then, I add a bit of water, then with a bit of ice, just to get a solid feeling for the pour. This bottle held up well throughout, and I’m surprised that I haven’t heard more people talking about how much they enjoy this whiskey. It’s a low key, VERY solid pour.
