Whiskey Tasting Review – Eagle Rare

Average Rating (0-100, from previously collected ratings) 78/100

What are you reviewing? Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon

What overall grade do you give it? C+

Do you remember how much you paid for the bottle? $37

Is the whiskey worth what you paid? No

Nose – A little bit of toffee or caramel, some orange, a lot of woodsy/oaky aroma.

Palate – Bold flavor with an oaky, leathery taste. A little vanilla.

Finish – A little sweetness in the finish that fades to oak and leather with a little bit of spicyness.

Does this whiskey remind you of a different whiskey? This bottle does not. Other bottles often remind me a lot of Four Roses Small Batch, or, of course, a more complex Buffalo Trace.

In your opinion, what’s the best use of this whiskey (sipping or mixing? Any recommendations on a particular mix? Sipper on ice maybe?

Is there anything about the whiskey we should know that we didn’t ask? Eagle Rare no longer carries the “single barrel” statement, but truth is, all but two bottles per barrel are actually single barrel. So, it’s common for one bottle to have a very different nose, palate, and finish than another. I’m not a fan of this bottle I just sipped. Yes, I’ll finish this bottle, and buy another when it’s gone, but this bottle gets a C+, my next bottle might be an A-, or somewhere between.
